Flow may be measured by measuring the velocity of fluid over a known area. For very large flows, tracer methods may be used to deduce the flow rate from the change in concentration of a dye or radioisotope.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both gas and liquid flow can be measured in\u00a0physical quantities\u00a0of kind\u00a0volumetric\u00a0or\u00a0mass flow rates, with\u00a0units\u00a0such as liters per second or kilograms per second, respectively. These measurements are related by the material&#8217;s\u00a0density. The density of a liquid is almost independent of conditions. This is not the case for gases, the densities of which depend greatly upon pressure, temperature and to a lesser extent, composition.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpeus.com\/products\/flow_measurement\/ultrasonic_gas_flowmeter_106634\/ultrasonic_gas_flowmeter.html\">gases<\/a> or liquids are transferred for their energy content, as in the sale of\u00a0natural gas, the flow rate may also be expressed in terms of energy flow, such as gigajoule per hour or BTU per day. The energy flow rate is the volumetric flow rate multiplied by the energy content per unit volume or mass flow rate <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpeus.com\/products\/system\/multiphase_106636\/multiphase.html\">multiplied<\/a> by the energy content per unit mass. This article discusses the curved tube design. Rotation without mass flow With mass flow, the tubes twist slightly<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The animations on the right do not represent an actually existing Coriolis flow meter design. The purpose of the animations is to illustrate the operating principle, and to show the connection with rotation.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fluid is being pumped through the mass flow meter. When there is mass flow, the tube twists slightly. The arm through which fluid flows away from the axis of rotation must exert a force on the fluid, to increase its\u00a0angular momentum, so it bends backwards. The arm through which fluid is pushed back to the axis of rotation must exert a force on the fluid to decrease the fluid&#8217;s angular momentum again, hence that arm will bend forward. In other words, the inlet arm (containing an outwards directed <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.se.com\/id\/id\/product-range\/65631-flow-meters\/\">flow<\/a>), is lagging behind the overall rotation, the part which in rest is parallel to the axis is now skewed, and the outlet arm (containing an inwards directed flow) leads the overall rotation.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"Calibration\" class=\"mw-headline\">Calibration<\/span><\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both mass flow and density measurements depend on the vibration of the tube. Calibration is affected by changes in the rigidity of the flow tubes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Changes in temperature and pressure will cause the tube rigidity to change, but these can be compensated for through pressure and temperature zero and span compensation factors. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Additional effects on tube rigidity will cause shifts in the calibration factor over time due to degradation of the flow tubes. These effects include pitting, cracking, coating, erosion or corrosion. It is not possible to compensate for these changes dynamically, but efforts to monitor the effects may be made through regular meter calibration or verification checks. Using ultrasonic\u00a0transducers, the flow meter can measure the average velocity along the path of an emitted beam of ultrasound, by averaging the difference in measured transit time between the pulses of ultrasound propagating into and against the direction of the flow or by measuring the frequency shift from the\u00a0Doppler effect. Ultrasonic flow meters are affected by the acoustic properties of the fluid and can be impacted by temperature, density, viscosity and suspended particulates depending on the exact flow meter. They vary greatly in purchase price but are often inexpensive to use and maintain because they do not use\u00a0moving parts, unlike mechanical flow meters.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5621925 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5621925\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Accuracy vs. Repeatability<\/strong><\/span><\/h4><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If acceptable metering performance can be obtained from two different flow meter categories and one has no moving parts, select the one without moving parts. Moving parts are a potential source of problems, not only for the obvious reasons of wear, lubrication, and sensitivity to coating, but also because moving parts require clearance spaces that sometimes introduce &#8220;slippage&#8221; into the flow being measured. Even with well maintained and calibrated meters, this unmeasured flow varies with changes in fluid viscosity and temperature. Changes in temperature also change the internal dimensions of the meter and require compensation.<br \/><br \/>Furthermore, if one can obtain the same performance from both a full flow meter and a point sensor, it is generally advisable to use the flow meter. Because point sensors do not look at the full flow, they read accurately only if they are inserted to a depth where the flow velocity is the average of the velocity profile across the pipe. Even if this point is carefully determined at the time of calibration, it is not likely to remain unaltered, since velocity profiles change with flowrate, viscosity, temperature, and other factors.<br
