Fire <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/mckarlen.com\/products\/fire-fighting-pump\/\">pumps<\/a> are used to increase the pressure of water sourced from a municipal underground water supply piping network, or a static supply (e.g., tank, reservoir, lake). A fire <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.purityfire.com\/fire-fighting-system\/pej-series-fire-hydrant-pump-with-jockey-and.html\">pump<\/a> is a\u00a0centrifugal-\u00a0or\u00a0positive displacement-\u00a0pump that has been tested and\u00a0listed\u00a0by a third-party testing and listing agency, such as\u00a0UL\u00a0or\u00a0FM Global\u00a0specifically for fire service use. The main standard that governs fire <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spppumps.com\/markets\/pumps\/fire-pump-packages\/category\/markets\/fire\/\">pump<\/a> fixed-place installations in North <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.durapump.co.uk\/product\/fire-pumps\/\">America<\/a> is the\u00a0National Fire Protection Association&#8217;s\u00a0<i>NFPA 20 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Fire <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waterousco.com\/product-category\/motor-pumps\/\">Pumps<\/a><\/span> for Fire Protection<\/i>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fire pumps are powered most commonly by an\u00a0electric motor\u00a0or a\u00a0diesel engine, or, occasionally a\u00a0steam turbine. If the governing model building code requires backup power independent of the local electric power grid, a fire <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasnet.com\/articles\/top-suppliers\/fire-pump-manufacturers-suppliers\/\">pump<\/a> using an electric motor may utilize an\u00a0emergency generator\u00a0when connected via a listed\u00a0transfer switch. Fire <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/m.lianchengpumps.com\/fire-fighting-pump\/\">pumps<\/a> installed on fire trucks and boats are powered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarkefire.com\/products\/engine-search\">engine<\/a> of the vehicle\/vessel.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/-\/media\/Images\/Blog-Images\/Blog-Post-Attachments\/NFPA-Today\/firepump5.ashx?h=285&amp;w=500&amp;hash=F8327123FC967D0B0A18E2FEAF9E6F0D\" width=\"393\" height=\"225\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Utilizing a control panel with pressure sensors, fire pumps automatically start when the pressure in the fire sprinkler system drops below a pre-designated threshold. Given the incompressibility of water, fire suppression system pressures drops significantly and quickly when one or more outlets open. Examples would be fused (opened) fire sprinklers, fire hose valves connected to a standpipe, or automatic control valves opened by release panels.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fire pumps are utilized when determined by\u00a0hydraulic calculations\u00a0that the existing water supply cannot provide sufficient pressure to meet the hydraulic design requirements of the suppression system. This usually occurs if the building is very tall, such as in\u00a0high-rise\u00a0buildings (to overcome\u00a0hydraulic head losses\u00a0created from elevation differences), in systems that require a relatively high terminal pressure at the fire suppression outlets (to provide sufficient water droplet penetration of a fire plume), or in systems that require a large discharge of water (such as storage warehouses). Fire pumps are also needed if fire protection water supply is provided from a static source which provides little or no pressure. Some situations may be compounded by all of these factors, requiring large water supplies and powerful fire pumps.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Common types of fire pumps used for fire service include: horizontal split case, vertical split case, vertical inline, vertical turbine, and end suction.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-189dd84 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"189dd84\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-22b527b\" data-id=\"22b527b\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5811d0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5811d0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/-\/media\/Images\/Blog-Images\/Blog-Post-Attachments\/NFPA-Today\/firepump3.ashx?h=300&amp;w=60&amp;hash=5484F7D07590C5C19B5AF7D372E9F736\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A\u00a0<b>jockey pump<\/b>, also known as a pressure-maintenance pump, is a small pump connected to a fire suppression system near the fire pump and is intended to maintain pressure in a fire protection piping system. These pumps recover pressures lost from gradual, slow pressure declines in a system due to temperature changes, trapped air escapement, or very small leaks. The jockey pump is essentially a portion of the fire pump&#8217;s control system. A jockey pump is sized for a flow less than one sprinkler in order to ensure a system pressure drop significant enough to start the main fire pump. Jockey pumps are typically small multistage centrifugal pumps, and do not have to be listed or certified for fire system application. The control equipment for jockey pumps may however carry approvals. Jockey pumps should be sized for 3% of the flow of the main fire pump and to provide 10psi more pressure than the main fire pump (As per Code IS 15105\u00a0: 2002)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Vertical Turbine Pump<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A vertical turbine pump is the only type of\u00a0pump allowed by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFPA 20<\/a><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">,\u00a0<\/a><em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>that can start with negative suction pressure or take water under a lift condition such as from a below grade source such as a river or subgrade tank. These pumps can be used with raw water sources such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. Vertical turbine pumps come in a wide range of capacities and pressures, and they can be used with diesel and electric drivers. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/uploads-ssl.webflow.com\/5a29c9e4d57a9c0001253585\/5b639fafae071054d3e28a77_Phoenix-2-013-D600-COLCOR-WEB.png\" alt=\"D600 Diesel Pump\" width=\"191\" height=\"202\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>In-Line Pump<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In-line pumps are useful where space is limited.\u00a0These\u00a0can be driven by both a vertical or horizontal shaft (end suction type).\u00a0Vertical shaft types, which are the most common, have the driver located directly above the pump.\u00a0These are typically one of the less expensive units and take the least amount of space but, they are also one of the more expensive to repair.\u00a0Pump maintenance and repair can be difficult because the motor must be lifted off and removed to gain access to the pump, unlike a split-case unit. With these pumps, the suction flange and discharge flange are on approximately the same plane. In-line pumps have a limited capacity of typically no more than 1,500 gpm (5,678 L\/min), and they can only be used with an electric driver\u00a0which limits their potential applications.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6b71124 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6b71124\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-35913d3\" data-id=\"35913d3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11ded09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"11ded09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ny-engineers.com\/hs-fs\/hubfs\/SS_Fire%20Alarm%20controller,%20Fire%20notifier,%20Anti%20fire.jpg?width=500&amp;height=334&amp;name=SS_Fire%20Alarm%20controller,%20Fire%20notifier,%20Anti%20fire.jpg\" alt=\"Fire Alarm controller for fire alarm system\" width=\"296\" height=\"197\" \/>Fire alarm control panel (FACP), fire alarm control unit (FACU), or fire panel, these appliances choreograph the activities of countless life-saving appliances to facilitate safe evacuation and swift emergency response during a fire. In this article, we\u2019ll take a look at how a fire alarm control panel features in a complete fire alarm system, what\u2019s required by the <em>International Building Code<\/em>\u00a0(IBC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and what these standards mean for choosing a fire panel.<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ull\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NFPA codes and standards<\/a>, including the NFPA 1 Fire Code and hundreds of standards that relate to fire protection and fire extinguishing systems including\u00a0sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire hoses, and tests relating to fire.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"content-title\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The NFPA Fire Code<\/span><\/h3><div class=\"txt-sec\"><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While the NFPA does not have the power to police or enforce compliance of its Fire Code or standards, these codes and standards are used throughout the U.S. to determine compliance of the fire safety requirements of many regulations. For example, the NYC Building Code 2014 specifically requires compliance with NFPA standards for:<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/-\/media\/Images\/Blog-Images\/Blog-Post-Attachments\/NFPA-Today\/fireAlarmBasics700.ashx\" \/><\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ull\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Automatic sprinklers<\/strong><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Standpipes<\/strong><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire pumps<\/strong><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire alarm systems<\/strong><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also, where NFPA codes and standards use the word \u201cshall\u201d to indicate requirements, this generally implies reference to mandatory requirements by other codes or standards that have been adopted into law.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Apart from straightforward legal issues, the Fire Code, which is reviewed and amended every three years, provides for life safety by providing requirements that will reduce the probability of injury and death as a result of fire, explosions, or any other events that involve hazardous materials.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Further, the Code aims to provide an environment for occupants and members of the public who may be near to a building or facility that is \u201creasonably safe\u201d from fire and similar emergencies. It also aims to protect emergency responders and fire fighters.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Elements defined in the 2018 edition of the NFPA 1 Fire Code, that are relevant to high rise fire alarm system design, include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><div class=\"ulll\"><ul class=\"ull\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Alarm\u00a0<\/strong>which indicates the existence of a \u201ccondition\u201d that calls for an immediate response \u2013 as in raise the alarm!<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Design specifications\u00a0<\/strong>that embody building characteristics and other conditions that are controlled by the design team usually representing the client, architect, pertinent engineers, and possibly other designers.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Detectors<\/strong>that have sensors which respond to certain physical stimuli including gas, heat, or smoke. More specifically, automatic fire detectors are designed to detect a \u201cfire signature\u201d that creates changes in the atmosphere and initiates action because of flames, gas, heat, smoke, and so on.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire alarm signals\u00a0<\/strong>that result from automatic or manual detection of fire alarm conditions.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire alarm systems\u00a0<\/strong>that consist of circuits and components that are arranged to monitor and reveal the status of various fire alarms and signal-initiating devices and, in this way, initiate an appropriate response.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire hydrants\u00a0<\/strong>used to supply hoses and fire department pumpers with water. These are valved connections on water supply systems that have one or more outlets.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire protection systems\u00a0<\/strong>that comprise any fire alarm device or system, or fire-extinguishing device or system, or a combination of these, that is designed and installed so that it will detect, control, or extinguish a fire or alert occupants of the building and\/or the fire department so they know a fire has occurred.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fire retardants\u00a0<\/strong>that are in a liquid, gas, or solid form and are used to inhibit combustion when used with combustible materials.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>High-rise building\u00a0<\/strong>which indicates that the floor of a story that may be occupied is greater than 75 feet (23 meters) above the lowest level of the fire department vehicle access.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Manual fire alarm boxes and pull stations\u00a0<\/strong>that are used to initiate fire alarm signals.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These definitions are all in keeping with those listed in the NYC Building Code 2014 which is, of course, legally enforceable.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section
