There are three basic types of pumps: positive-displacement<a href=\"https:\/\/kawanerabaru.com\/fungsi-gear-pump-serta-manfaat-dan-aplikasinya\/\">,\u00a0<\/a>centrifugal\u00a0and\u00a0axial-flow\u00a0pumps. In centrifugal pumps the direction of flow of the fluid changes by ninety degrees as it flows over an impeller, while in axial flow pumps the direction of flow is unchanged.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/6\/66\/LobePump_en.svg\/170px-LobePump_en.svg.png\" width=\"198\" height=\"140\" \/><\/p><h3><span id=\"Positive-displacement_pumps\" class=\"mw-headline\">Positive-displacement pumps<\/span><\/h3><div class=\"thumb tright\"><div class=\"thumbinner\"><div class=\"thumbcaption\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Lobe pump internals A positive displacement pump<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> makes a fluid move by trapping a fixed amount and forcing (displacing) that trapped volume into the discharge pipe. Some positive-displacement pumps use an expanding cavity on the suction side and a decreasing cavity on the discharge side.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kanur.id\/staging\/level-sensor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liquid flows<\/a>\u00a0into the pump as the cavity on the suction side expands and the liquid flows out of the discharge as the cavity collapses. The volume is constant through each cycle of operation.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><h4><span id=\"Positive-displacement_pump_behavior_and_safety\" class=\"mw-headline\">Positive-displacement pump behavior and safety<\/span><\/h4><p>Positive-displacement pumps, unlike\u00a0centrifugal, can theoretically produce the same flow at a given speed (rpm) no matter what the discharge pressure. Thus, positive-displacement pumps are\u00a0<i>constant flow machines<\/i>. However, a slight increase in internal leakage as the pressure increases prevents a truly constant flow rate.<\/p><p>A positive-displacement pump must not operate against a closed valve on the discharge side of the pump, because it has no shutoff head like centrifugal pumps. The gear pump was invented around of year 1600.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p><p>Gear pumps are also widely used in chemical installations to pump high\u00a0viscosity\u00a0fluids. There are two main variations:\u00a0<i>external gear pumps<\/i>\u00a0which use two external spur gears, and\u00a0<i>internal gear pumps<\/i>\u00a0which use an external and an internal spur gear (internal spur gear teeth face inwards, see below). Gear pumps are\u00a0<i>positive displacement<\/i>\u00a0(or\u00a0<i>fixed displacement<\/i>), meaning they pump a constant amount of fluid for each revolution. Some gear pumps are designed to function as either a\u00a0motor\u00a0or a pump.<\/p><p>As the gears rotate they separate on the intake side of the pump, creating a void and suction which is filled by\u00a0fluid. The fluid is carried by the gears to the discharge side of the pump, where the meshing of the gears displaces the fluid. The mechanical clearances are small\u2014 in the order of 10 \u03bcm. The tight clearances, along with the speed of rotation, effectively prevent the fluid from leaking backwards.<\/p><p>The rigid design of the gears and houses allow for very high pressures and the ability to pump highly\u00a0viscous\u00a0fluids.<\/p><p>Many variations exist, including helical and\u00a0herringbone gear\u00a0sets (instead of spur gears), lobe shaped rotors similar to\u00a0Roots blowers\u00a0(commonly used as\u00a0superchargers), and mechanical designs that allow the stacking of pumps. The most common variations are shown below (the drive gear is shown\u00a0blue\u00a0and the idler is shown\u00a0purple).<\/p><h2><span id=\"Applications\" class=\"mw-headline\"><img decoding=\"async\" \/>Applications<\/span><\/h2><ul><li>Petrochemicals: Pure or filled bitumen, pitch, diesel oil, crude oil, lube oil etc.<\/li><li>Chemicals: Sodium silicate, acids, plastics, mixed chemicals, isocyanates etc.<\/li><li>Paint and ink.<\/li><li>Resins and adhesives.<\/li><li>Pulp and paper: acid, soap, lye, black liquor, kaolin, lime, latex, sludge etc.<\/li><li>Food: Chocolate, cacao butter, fillers, sugar, vegetable fats and oils, molasses, animal food etc.<\/li><\/ul><h5>Rotary positive-displacement pumps fall into 5 main types:<\/h5><ul><li>Gear pumps\u00a0\u2013 a simple type of rotary pump where the liquid is pushed around a pair of gears.<\/li><li>Screw pumps\u00a0\u2013 the shape of the internals of this pump is usually two screws turning against each other to pump the liquid<\/li><li>Rotary vane pumps<\/li><li>Hollow disk pumps (also known as eccentric disc pumps or Hollow rotary disc pumps).<sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/li><li>Vibratory
