High Pressure, Low Volume Pump

Water extinguishes fire largely through the absorption of heat from the burning material by the conversion of liquid water into water vapour. The higher the proportion of the water applied to a fire that can undergo this conversion, the more efficient is the extinguishing action.

High pressure, low volume pumps produce water streams that consist of small droplets of water. Water in the form of small droplets has a much larger surface area for each litre applied to a fire. This provides greater opportunity for the liquid to vapour conversion of water to take place, and therefore can provide more efficient extinguishment.

High pressure, low volume pumps operate of pressures of 7000 kPa to 15000 kPa, depending on the make and model. Flow rates are quite low, typically in the 2 to 20 litre per minute range, depending on the nozzle setting in use.

Water is supplied from the pump through a small diameter (e.g. 10 mm internal diameter) high pressure, hydraulic-type hose to a high pressure nozzle. The nozzle typically incorporates a pistol-grip with a self-closing, trigger-type valve. The nozzle is usually adjustable, so as to provide a range of flow rates and discharge patterns.

Some models of high pressure, low volume pumps have additional features, such as provision for foam injection used in association with a foam applicator. Some may also be capable of being connected into an ejector pump: The high pressure water supply passing through the venturi of the ejector pump can draught water from an open source and return it to the appliance, or a separate tank or container, via a 38mm delivery hose.

High pressure, low volume pumps are typically used on small rural fire fighting appliances. They enable the limited amount of water carried on such appliances (e.g. 300 to 500 litres) to be used more efficiently, especially on fires burning in light materials, such as grass. Overseas they have also been used on small initial attack appliances for structural fire fighting in cities and towns with very narrow streets and alleyways.

While the high pressure may be able to produce smaller water droplets and a more efficient extinguishing action, the low rate of flow limits the size of fire on which they can ultimately be effective. They are not suitable for situations that require high flow rates to provide sufficient cooling action on a large and/or intense fire.

High pressure, low volume portable pumps should not be relied upon as the sole source of fire fighting agent at incidents which involve large, intense fires, or which could involve a large, intense fire (such as when standing by to protect rescue work at a motor vehicle accident involving spilt fuel). The low volumes used also mean that filters, pipe-work and nozzles are finer than usual and may be more susceptible to blockage by grit or other foreign material. High pressure water jets are dangerous and should never be applied towards a person.

Standard 1921 divides portable pumps into four classes

Small volume/relatively high pressure.These units are useful at brush and forest fires where long lengths of 3/4-inch to 1 1/2-inch hose may be required, including for uphill pumping in difficult terrain. Portable pumps in this class are capable of pumping 20 gpm at 200 psi net pressure through a 1-inch discharge outlet while taking suction through a 1 1/2-inch suction inlet. Good nozzle reach can be attained. Weight is limited to 150 pounds. Size is limited to 25 inches on each side.
Medium volume/medium pressure. These pumps can deliver 60 gpm at 90 psi net pump pressure through a 2 1/2-inch discharge while taking suction through a 2 1/2-inch suction inlet. They are useful on minor structural fires and to fill booster tanks on apparatus. They can also be used with 2 1/2-inch hose to move water over longer distances, or to supply a 60-gpm fog nozzle through 250 feet of 1 3/4-inch hose. This class also is limited to 150 pounds and a size of 25 inches per side.
Large volume/relatively low pressure. These pumps can supply 125 gpm at 60 psi or 300 gpm at 20 psi net pump pressure through 2 1/2-inch discharge and 3-inch suction inlet. They are intended for quick use in filling tanks where a pumper cannot get close enough to the source. Another use may be in draining cellars and other low areas where water accumulates. Two 1 1/2-inch to 1 3/4-inch lines can be supplied for short lengths with 60-gpm fog nozzles. The result, however, may not be suitable flows for interior fire fighting. The size limitation for the class is the same 25 inches on each side and weight is limited to 175 pounds.
Special classes. The class includes floating pumps, backpack pumps and others that vary from or exceed the requirements of the previous classes. Some floating pumps can prime and pump automatically when placed in water.

Usually portable pumps are centrifugal pumps driven by diesel or gasoline engines. Four-cycle engines are considered more suitable for fire service use, although 2-cycle or newer turbine pumps can be used. Note that 4-cycle engines must be used in a level position to avoid engine damage.

Gear pumps are also available, but using them in dirty water with any suspended debris can result in damage to gears and case. Gear pumps have a shorter life span than the centrifugal type. Piston pumps provide another option, but they are limited to small capacities and weigh more than centrifugal or gear pumps.

Low pressure centrifugal pumps usually will not discharge rated capacities when operating with suction lift higher than 5 feet. Centrifugal pumps without seal rings can be used in dirty water and will usually require little maintenance. Other types of pumps in this category with seal rings will not hold up as long when pumping water containing abrasive materials.

High pressure centrifugal pumps have smaller capacity than the low pressure type, but high pressure impellers are usually geared twice as fast as the engine to get the pressure at single stage.

Fire alarm

A fire alarm control panel (FACP), fire alarm control unit (FACU), fire indicator panel (FIP), or simply fire alarm panel is the controlling component of a fire alarm system. The panel receives information from devices designed to detect and report fires, monitors their operational integrity and provides for automatic control of equipment, and transmission of information necessary to prepare the facility for fire based on a predetermined sequence. The panel may also supply electrical energy to operate any associated initiating device, notification appliance, control, transmitter, or relay. There are four basic types of panels: coded panels, conventional panels, addressable panels, and multiplex systems.

Coded panels were the earliest type of central fire alarm control, and were made during the 1800s to the 1970s. A coded panel is similar in many ways to a modern conventional panel (described below), except each zone was connected to its own code wheel ( i.e. An alarm in zone 1 would sound code 1-2-4 [through the bells or horns in the building], while zone 2 would sound 1-2-5), which, depending on the way the panel was set up, would either do sets of four rounds of code until the initiating pull station was reset (similar to a coded pull station) or run continuously until the panel itself was reset. Large panels could take up an entire wall in a mechanical room, with dozens of code wheels. Lists of codes had to be maintained, sometimes with copies posted above pull stations (this setup is commonly seen in older wings of hospitals). Smaller panels could be set up in one of two ways. Most of the time, the panel would only have one zone, and therefore, only one code. Common one-zone codes were 4-4-0 and 17-0-0 (which is similar to the 120 bpm March Time setting used on later panels, which has in turn been replaced with an interrupted four count uniform temporal code 3 pattern used since 1996). Alternatively, the panel could be made with no code wheels, using only what was called the gong relay. Normally, this would be used in a system with coded pull stations to re-transmit the coding strikes from the pulls. However, it could also be used as its own zone, with the connected horns or bells sounding continuously instead of in a particular code. These panels are not common today, but can sometimes be found in older buildings such as those on college campuses or hospitals.

Today, there are two types of fire panels :

Conventional fire alarm panel.
Addressable fire alarm panel.

Conventional

Conventional panels have been around ever since electronics became small enough to make them viable. Conventional panels are used less frequently in large buildings than in the past, but are not uncommon on smaller projects such as small schools, stores, restaurants, and apartments.

A conventional fire alarm control panel employs one or more circuits, connected to initiating devices (usually smoke detectors, heat detectors, duct detectors, manual pull stations, and sometimes flame detectors) wired in parallel. These sensors are devised to dramatically decrease the circuit resistance when the environmental influence on any sensor exceeds a predetermined threshold. In a conventional fire alarm system, the information density is limited to the number of such circuits used.

To facilitate location and control of fire within a building, the structure is subdivided into definite areas or zones. Floors of a multistory building are one type of zone boundary.

An Initiating Device Circuit (known as a Signaling Line Circuit (SLC) in addressable systems) connected to multiple devices within the same “zone” of protection, effectively provides 3 bits of information about the zone to the panel; normal, trouble, and alarm. The state of each initiating device circuit within a zone displays at the fire alarm control panel using visible indications, such as a flashing LED/light or an LCD display.

The panel may employ a graphical representation of the zone boundaries on a floor plan (zone map) using textual descriptions, illuminated icons, illuminated sections, or illuminated points on the map corresponding to initiating circuits connected to the fire alarm control panel. Annunciators that do this are called graphic annunciators.

Larger systems and increasing demand for finer diagnostic detail beyond broad area location and control functions expanded the control by zone strategy of conventional systems by providing multiple initiating circuits within a common zone, each exclusively connected to a particular type of initiating device, or group of devices. This arrangement forms a device type by zone matrix whose information is particularly suited to the Tabular annunciator In multi store buildings employing a Tabular annunciator, for example; rows of indicators define the floors horizontally in their stacked relationship and the type of device installed on that floor displays as columns of indicators vertically aligned through each floor. The intersection of the floor and device indicators provides the combined information. The density of information however remains a function of the number of circuits employed.

Even larger systems and demands for finer diagnostic and location detail led to the introduction of addressable fire alarm systems, with each addressable device providing specific information about its state while sharing a common communication circuit. Annunciation and location strategies for the most part remain relatively unchanged.

Multiplex systems

Multiplex systems, a sort of transition between conventional and modern addressable systems, were often used in large buildings and complexes from the mid to late 1970s into the late 1980s. Early on, these systems were programmed to function as large conventional systems. Gradually, later installations began to feature components and features of modern addressable systems. These systems were often capable of controlling more than a building’s fire alarm system (i.e. HVAC, security, electronic door locks…) without any type of alarm or trouble condition present. While the main panel was the brains of the system and could be used to access certain functions, fire alarm controls were usually accessed through transponders. These were smaller conventional panels programmed to ‘communicate’ the status of part of the system to the main panel and also could be used to access basic fire alarm control functions.

Fire alarm control panel (FACP), fire alarm control unit (FACU), or fire panel, these appliances choreograph the activities of countless life-saving appliances to facilitate safe evacuation and swift emergency response during a fire. In this article, we’ll take a look at how a fire alarm control panel features in a complete fire alarm system, what’s required by the International Building Code (IBC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and what these standards mean for choosing a fire panel.

NFPA codes and standards, including the NFPA Fire Code and hundreds of standards that relate to fire protection and fire extinguishing systems including sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire hoses, and tests relating to fire.

The NFPA Fire Code

While the NFPA does not have the power to police or enforce compliance of its Fire Code or standards, these codes and standards are used throughout the U.S. to determine compliance of the fire safety requirements of many regulations. For example, the NYC Building Code 2014 specifically requires compliance with NFPA standards for:

Automatic sprinklers
Standpipes
Fire pumps
Fire alarm systems

Also, where NFPA codes and standards use the word “shall” to indicate requirements, this generally implies reference to mandatory requirements by other codes or standards that have been adopted into law.

Apart from straightforward legal issues, the Fire Code, which is reviewed and amended every three years, provides for life safety by providing requirements that will reduce the probability of injury and death as a result of fire, explosions, or any other events that involve hazardous materials.

Further, the Code aims to provide an environment for occupants and members of the public who may be near to a building or facility that is “reasonably safe” from fire and similar emergencies. It also aims to protect emergency responders and fire fighters.

Elements defined in the 2018 edition of the NFPA 1 Fire Code, that are relevant to high rise fire alarm system design, include:

Alarm which indicates the existence of a “condition” that calls for an immediate response – as in raise the alarm!
Design specifications that embody building characteristics and other conditions that are controlled by the design team usually representing the client, architect, pertinent engineers, and possibly other designers.
Detectorsthat have sensors which respond to certain physical stimuli including gas, heat, or smoke. More specifically, automatic fire detectors are designed to detect a “fire signature” that creates changes in the atmosphere and initiates action because of flames, gas, heat, smoke, and so on.
Fire alarm signals that result from automatic or manual detection of fire alarm conditions.
Fire alarm systems that consist of circuits and components that are arranged to monitor and reveal the status of various fire alarms and signal-initiating devices and, in this way, initiate an appropriate response.
Fire hydrants used to supply hoses and fire department pumpers with water. These are valved connections on water supply systems that have one or more outlets.
Fire protection systems that comprise any fire alarm device or system, or fire-extinguishing device or system, or a combination of these, that is designed and installed so that it will detect, control, or extinguish a fire or alert occupants of the building and/or the fire department so they know a fire has occurred.
Fire retardants that are in a liquid, gas, or solid form and are used to inhibit combustion when used with combustible materials.
High-rise building which indicates that the floor of a story that may be occupied is greater than 75 feet (23 meters) above the lowest level of the fire department vehicle access.
Manual fire alarm boxes and pull stations that are used to initiate fire alarm signals.

These definitions are all in keeping with those listed in the NYC Building Code 2014 which is, of course, legally enforceable.

Fire Pump

A fire pump usually refers to a pressure-increasing component of the water supply for fixed-place fire suppression systems such as fire sprinklers, standpipes, and foam systems. Fire pumps are also a critical component integrated into fire trucks and fire boats, and serve a similar purpose boosting water supplies for firefighting hose operations. Fire pumps are used to increase the pressure of water sourced from a municipal underground water supply piping network, or a static supply (e.g., tank, reservoir, lake). A fire pump is a centrifugal- or positive displacement- pump that has been tested and listed by a third-party testing and listing agency, such as UL or FM Global specifically for fire service use. The main standard that governs fire pump fixed-place installations in North America is the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 20 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Fire Pumps for Fire Protection.

Fire pumps are powered most commonly by an electric motor or a diesel engine, or, occasionally a steam turbine. If the governing model building code requires backup power independent of the local electric power grid, a fire pump using an electric motor may utilize an emergency generator when connected via a listed transfer switch. Fire pumps installed on fire trucks and boats are powered by the engine of the vehicle/vessel.

Utilizing a control panel with pressure sensors, fire pumps automatically start when the pressure in the fire sprinkler system drops below a pre-designated threshold. Given the incompressibility of water, fire suppression system pressures drops significantly and quickly when one or more outlets open. Examples would be fused (opened) fire sprinklers, fire hose valves connected to a standpipe, or automatic control valves opened by release panels.

Fire pumps are utilized when determined by hydraulic calculations that the existing water supply cannot provide sufficient pressure to meet the hydraulic design requirements of the suppression system. This usually occurs if the building is very tall, such as in high-rise buildings (to overcome hydraulic head losses created from elevation differences), in systems that require a relatively high terminal pressure at the fire suppression outlets (to provide sufficient water droplet penetration of a fire plume), or in systems that require a large discharge of water (such as storage warehouses). Fire pumps are also needed if fire protection water supply is provided from a static source which provides little or no pressure. Some situations may be compounded by all of these factors, requiring large water supplies and powerful fire pumps.

Common types of fire pumps used for fire service include: horizontal split case, vertical split case, vertical inline, vertical turbine, and end suction.

The electric fire engine is a fire engine with a water pump, used to distribute water to put out a fire, operated by an electric motor. Electric fire engines were first proposed in the 19th century to replace the steam pumpers used for firefighting. The electric motor was claimed to be simpler, cleaner, and faster in operation, would save money, and require less maintenance than the steam fire engine. Contemporary battery-operated models also exist.

The electric motor was equipped with several hundred feet of cable carried on a reel. The cable attached to a specially designed electrical outlet box that was nearest to the fire. The box would be located next to the water plugs throughout the city districts in the manner previously mentioned. When the engine was tested, it gave very good results, and is now in use at the factory of the Crocker-Wheeler Electric Company, in Ampere.

Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor. They are a sub-class of dynamic axisymmetric work-absorbing turbo machinery. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from which it exits.

Jockey Pump

A jockey pump, also known as a pressure-maintenance pump, is a small pump connected to a fire suppression system near the fire pump and is intended to maintain pressure in a fire protection piping system. These pumps recover pressures lost from gradual, slow pressure declines in a system due to temperature changes, trapped air escapement, or very small leaks. The jockey pump is essentially a portion of the fire pump’s control system. A jockey pump is sized for a flow less than one sprinkler in order to ensure a system pressure drop significant enough to start the main fire pump. Jockey pumps are typically small multistage centrifugal pumps, and do not have to be listed or certified for fire system application. The control equipment for jockey pumps may however carry approvals. Jockey pumps should be sized for 3% of the flow of the main fire pump and to provide 10psi more pressure than the main fire pump (As per Code IS 15105 : 2002)

Diesel pump

Circulation relief valve, Safety Valve, PRV

Each pump shall have a circulation relief valve listed for the fire pump service installed and set below the shutoff pressure at minimum expected suction pressure. Exception: This rule shall not apply to engine-driven pumps for which engine cooling water is taken from the pump discharge.

Calculation Flow rate must be sizing.

Fire Flow Meter

A water flow test, also known as a hydrant flow test, is a way to measure the water supply available at a building site, usually for the purposes of installing a water based fire protection system (fire sprinkler system).

The most common test involves measuring the flow of water flowing out of a municipal fire hydrant (measured in gallons per minute) while recording how much the water pressure has dropped (from no water flow to test flow). When the results are collected carefully, formulas can be applied to figure the varying pressure(s) that will be available when different amounts of water flow are used from the same source. A process to perform a water flow test is explained in the model fire codes as published by NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

If a water supply source is considered weak compared to what is required by the sprinkler system design hydraulic calculation, the water pressure can be boosted by means of a fire pump.

Fire Hydrant Pump

A fire pump usually refers to a pressure-increasing component of the water supply for fixed-place fire suppression systems such as fire sprinklers, standpipes, and foam systems. Fire pumps are also a critical component integrated into fire trucks and fire boats, and serve a similar purpose boosting water supplies for firefighting hose operations. Fire pumps are used to increase the pressure of water sourced from a municipal underground water supply piping network, or a static supply (e.g., tank, reservoir, lake). A fire pump is a centrifugal- or positive displacement- pump that has been tested and listed by a third-party testing and listing agency, such as UL or FM Global specifically for fire service use. The main standard that governs fire pump fixed-place installations in North America is the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 20 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Fire Pumps for Fire Protection.

Fire pumps are powered most commonly by an electric motor or a diesel engine, or, occasionally a steam turbine. If the governing model building code requires backup power independent of the local electric power grid, a fire pump using an electric motor may utilize an emergency generator when connected via a listed transfer switch. Fire pumps installed on fire trucks and boats are powered by the engine of the vehicle/vessel.

Utilizing a control panel with pressure sensors, fire pumps automatically start when the pressure in the fire sprinkler system drops below a pre-designated threshold. Given the incompressibility of water, fire suppression system pressures drops significantly and quickly when one or more outlets open. Examples would be fused (opened) fire sprinklers, fire hose valves connected to a standpipe, or automatic control valves opened by release panels.

Fire pumps are utilized when determined by hydraulic calculations that the existing water supply cannot provide sufficient pressure to meet the hydraulic design requirements of the suppression system. This usually occurs if the building is very tall, such as in high-rise buildings (to overcome hydraulic head losses created from elevation differences), in systems that require a relatively high terminal pressure at the fire suppression outlets (to provide sufficient water droplet penetration of a fire plume), or in systems that require a large discharge of water (such as storage warehouses). Fire pumps are also needed if fire protection water supply is provided from a static source which provides little or no pressure. Some situations may be compounded by all of these factors, requiring large water supplies and powerful fire pumps.

Common types of fire pumps used for fire service include: horizontal split case, vertical split case, vertical inline, vertical turbine, and end suction.

Vertical Turbine Pump

A vertical turbine pump is the only type of pump allowed by NFPA 20 , Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection that can start with negative suction pressure or take water under a lift condition such as from a below grade source such as a river or subgrade tank. These pumps can be used with raw water sources such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. Vertical turbine pumps come in a wide range of capacities and pressures, and they can be used with diesel and electric drivers.

In-Line Pump

In-line pumps are useful where space is limited. These can be driven by both a vertical or horizontal shaft (end suction type). Vertical shaft types, which are the most common, have the driver located directly above the pump. These are typically one of the less expensive units and take the least amount of space but, they are also one of the more expensive to repair. Pump maintenance and repair can be difficult because the motor must be lifted off and removed to gain access to the pump, unlike a split-case unit. With these pumps, the suction flange and discharge flange are on approximately the same plane. In-line pumps have a limited capacity of typically no more than 1,500 gpm (5,678 L/min), and they can only be used with an electric driver which limits their potential applications.

Fire alarm control panel (FACP), fire alarm control unit (FACU), or fire panel, these appliances choreograph the activities of countless life-saving appliances to facilitate safe evacuation and swift emergency response during a fire. In this article, we’ll take a look at how a fire alarm control panel features in a complete fire alarm system, what’s required by the International Building Code (IBC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and what these standards mean for choosing a fire panel.

NFPA codes and standards, including the NFPA 1 Fire Code and hundreds of standards that relate to fire protection and fire extinguishing systems including sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire hoses, and tests relating to fire.

The NFPA Fire Code

While the NFPA does not have the power to police or enforce compliance of its Fire Code or standards, these codes and standards are used throughout the U.S. to determine compliance of the fire safety requirements of many regulations. For example, the NYC Building Code 2014 specifically requires compliance with NFPA standards for:

Automatic sprinklers
Standpipes
Fire pumps
Fire alarm systems

Also, where NFPA codes and standards use the word “shall” to indicate requirements, this generally implies reference to mandatory requirements by other codes or standards that have been adopted into law.

Apart from straightforward legal issues, the Fire Code, which is reviewed and amended every three years, provides for life safety by providing requirements that will reduce the probability of injury and death as a result of fire, explosions, or any other events that involve hazardous materials.

Further, the Code aims to provide an environment for occupants and members of the public who may be near to a building or facility that is “reasonably safe” from fire and similar emergencies. It also aims to protect emergency responders and fire fighters.

Elements defined in the 2018 edition of the NFPA 1 Fire Code, that are relevant to high rise fire alarm system design, include:

Alarm which indicates the existence of a “condition” that calls for an immediate response – as in raise the alarm!
Design specifications that embody building characteristics and other conditions that are controlled by the design team usually representing the client, architect, pertinent engineers, and possibly other designers.
Detectorsthat have sensors which respond to certain physical stimuli including gas, heat, or smoke. More specifically, automatic fire detectors are designed to detect a “fire signature” that creates changes in the atmosphere and initiates action because of flames, gas, heat, smoke, and so on.
Fire alarm signals that result from automatic or manual detection of fire alarm conditions.
Fire alarm systems that consist of circuits and components that are arranged to monitor and reveal the status of various fire alarms and signal-initiating devices and, in this way, initiate an appropriate response.
Fire hydrants used to supply hoses and fire department pumpers with water. These are valved connections on water supply systems that have one or more outlets.
Fire protection systems that comprise any fire alarm device or system, or fire-extinguishing device or system, or a combination of these, that is designed and installed so that it will detect, control, or extinguish a fire or alert occupants of the building and/or the fire department so they know a fire has occurred.
Fire retardants that are in a liquid, gas, or solid form and are used to inhibit combustion when used with combustible materials.
High-rise building which indicates that the floor of a story that may be occupied is greater than 75 feet (23 meters) above the lowest level of the fire department vehicle access.
Manual fire alarm boxes and pull stations that are used to initiate fire alarm signals.

These definitions are all in keeping with those listed in the NYC Building Code 2014 which is, of course, legally enforceable.
